Constance
Friday
April 9th
1999
Constance was livid. She'd contacted the church first to try to get a hold of Hunter and Owen. Her son had not been home the whole week, not since the big fight where Owen had guided Hunter out the door. Nor had Owen been at school. She had no idea where Hunter had gone with her son.
The church had told her nothing.
She'd waited outside during services to see if they'd emerge from the church and she'd have a chance to see her son. Neither Hunter nor Owen ever left the building. Constance drove all around the county, looking for Hunter's red pickup, wondering if they'd been in an accident. There was no sign of them.
A representative from the church flat out told her that they couldn't help her. That as she was no longer a member, they weren't required to tell her anything. Nor were they inclined to do so. Constance cursed out Jeffrey Evans' secretary under her breath as she hung up the phone.
Getting nowhere with the church, she then turned to her job with the state to try to get some help in finding her son. To her dismay, her department head told her that his hands were tied in this situation, since Owen was 18, he legally had the right to leave with his father.
Constance finally filed a missing persons report with the police, but they quickly brushed her off, reminding her that Owen was an adult, and if Hunter didn't want to be found, he had every right to stay away from Constance.
Now, Constance was sitting up in her living room, one week after her son left, her fingers tapping on the back of the cordless phone as she stared into the dark, sick with fear for her sweet Owen.
"Mom?" Leah's voice was so quiet.
Constance jolted up out of her daze, and exclaimed, "Oh shit, you scared the crap out of me!"
"Sorry.â
"Are you alright?" Constance looked up at Leah in concern.
Leah nodded, then immediately began to cry as she shook her head no.
"I miss him," she sniffled. "I keep expecting to see Owen when I get up in the morning, and he's just not there. And I feel like it's my fault."
"No," Constance shook her head adamantly. "None of this is your fault. Don't ever, ever, ever think that!" Constance got up and crossed to Leah, pulling her in for a tight hug. "Please don't ever blame yourself."
Leah cried into Constance's shirt.
Suddenly, the phone rang. Both Constance and Leah turned to it in surprise.
Constance snatched up the phone and pressed the button, putting it to her ear just as she gasped "Hello?!"
There was nothing.
No.
Wait.
There was the crackling of a weak connection. Something in the background. Breathing?
"Hello?!" Constance repeated.
Leah pressed her ear up to the phone so she could hear too.
"Is someone there?" Constance asked.
"Mom?" there came a terrified whisper.
Constance's heart jumped into her throat.
"Owen?! Owen, is that you?!" Constance cried. Leah was staring at her wide-eyed.
Suddenly the phone clicked, and there was a dial-tone.
"Hit star 69!" Leah urged.
