A knock on the door made me groan. It was only ten in the morning, and I was wearing one of Adán’s old sweaters that I couldn’t get myself to throw out and my pajama shorts that barely covered my ass. Combined with pink fluffy socks, I wasn’t exactly fit for company.

Mamá and Papá were coming back in two days, and the house and garden were a mess. Add to that my cake plans with Nora and Sebastian—and now Thad—and my Saturday was full. I was planning on ignoring whoever was at the door, but as usual, my son had other ideas.

He raced up the hallway, too fast for me to catch him. “Someone’s at the door.” He slid to a stop, then unlocked and opened the front door right before I dove for him.

His giggles rang through the house as we rolled around on the floor, me mock growling at him and him squirming out of my hold.

Looking up from where I was still lying on the floor on my belly—Felix now sitting on top of me—I met Thad’s emerald eyes, which glowed warmly at me. He lifted Felix off me, bouncing him under his arm.

Felix shrieked, then giggled. “More, more.”

Thad complied, then turned in a circle with my son under his arm. Miles rushed inside the house since Thad had dropped his lead when he picked up Felix. Seizing his opportunity, Miles licked my face, his little body vibrating in excitement.

Laughing while fending off the tiny dog, I stumbled back to my feet, groaning at the twinge in my knees. I was too old to roll around on the ground.

Staring at Thad, who had stopped turning, I took in his jeans and T-shirt and the bag he clutched in the hand not holding Felix. “What are you doing here?”

He lifted the mystery bag. “I brought donuts.”

Felix cheered. “I love donuts. Can I have three?”

Looking at the back of my son’s head, I put my hands on my hips, even though he couldn’t see me. “You can have one. And you have to sit down to eat it.”

I didn’t have time to scrape chocolate off the furniture, so it was best to contain the mess he would no doubt make to one area.

Thad took that as his invitation to come in, closing the door behind him and setting Felix back on his feet. As soon as Felix was standing again, he spotted Miles. Kneeling, he hugged the little dog, squealing excitedly when he received the same treatment as I had.

Thad held out the bag, his smile almost as big as my son’s. “Why don’t you take this to the kitchen and choose one?”

Taking an opportunity when it was given, Felix clutched the bag to his chest and ran as fast as his little feet would carry him, Miles hot on his heels.

Raising a brow at Thad, my hands still on my hips, I ignored the way my insides clenched at seeing him. “Rookie mistake. Never let go of the donuts or leave my son alone with them.
