“Judy-Anne!” he called out, heart racing with fear of giving away his position. The city wasn’t silent, but it wasn’t flooded with the noise of cars and honking horns like a real town would have been.

Judy-Anne looked up, a bewildered look on her face. She looked all around, trying to locate the person calling her name. When she scanned the fence, Martin made his boldest move yet. He stepped past the tree line and stood in plain sight, praying that his camouflage wouldn’t be too effective for his daughter to miss him.

It worked. Judy-Anne’s eyes widened and her jaw dropped, and Martin was sure for a moment that she was going to burst into tears. She was still about thirty yards away, but he could see nothing else but her beautiful face.

The phone vibrated in his pocket, and he knew it was Jane desperately pleading with him to go back into hiding. He didn’t care. This was what he had been searching for and finally found, and he wasn’t about to let the moment pass.

Judy-Anne stood for a moment, unbelieving of what she saw in the distance. The reality of the situation set in, and turned to her father and began to run. Martin raised his hands, palms toward Judy-Anne, and made a shushing gesture with his mouth. She stopped, realizing that she saw what no one else was supposed to see, and that she was on the verge of risking her father’s life.

Looking around to see if anyone else had noticed the man standing just beyond the fence, Judy-Anne stuffed her hands into the pockets of her jeans and walked toward the fence at a casual pace. Her head remained on a swivel as she neared the perimeter, looking for anyone watching the unusual scene unfold.

Despite her restrained pace, Judy-Anne arrived at the fence in a short amount of time. Looking up, she was surprised to see no one standing beyond the edge. She placed her hands on the links of the fence, and looked deep into the forest, wondering if she had imagined seeing and hearing her father, a result of the impact against the pavement when she had been attacked.

“Judy-Anne.”

She heard her name whispered, and knew it to be the sound of her father’s voice, and nearly cried with the realization that she hadn’t been hallucinating. Martin poked his head out from behind a large tree, almost comically, and smiled at his daughter.

Judy-Anne could no longer contain herself. Tears began flowing from her eyes, and her whole face flushed as she saw a face she had been sure she would never see again. She gripped the chain-link fence hard, holding herself up as her knees weakened.

“Dad!” she croaked, trying to keep her voice down. “Dad, what are you doing here? How did you find me?”

“Don’t worry about that now, honey. Are you okay?”

“Yes, I’m okay. I just...”

“I saw what happened back there. Judy-Anne, I’m so proud of you for protecting yourself.”

“Dad, I miss you. And mom.” Her demeanor changed as she remembered the rest of her family.
