Respect for the client

Do remember that you could never possibly know how it feels to be the other person. You may empathize and you may imagine but you will never know what it is like to be someone else, so be careful not to claim something – or to second-guess it. For example, if you are a white Jewish male aged 35 and your client is a 60-year old Indian Muslim woman, you have no idea what it feels like to be her or to walk in her shoes. She may have an aspect in her chart that you are exploring but the client you saw the day before with the same aspect (who was a 25-year old male) will experience this differently. We need to be reminded that there are social and cultural differences here, and care should be taken not to impose our own ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation and our moral perspective onto our clients.

Remember to ensure the client owns their own experiences and chart. I have often heard astrologers tell other people exactly how the astrology in their chart plays out, thereby projecting onto them a deterministic assessment rather than asking them how they experience a particular point in their chart. To tell (or argue with) anyone that this must be what it is like, or that this is how they will feel because this is what the astrology says, is inaccurate and unproductive. It is also ignorant and an abuse of power. To say things like ‘But this is what you have’ is not appropriate. Don’t argue about what you think is astrologically right.

The consultant’s role is to listen and to assist the client in becoming more self-aware and insightful (expectant) about what is to come. For instance, when a woman is pregnant her experience is a common and universal one, yet it is also unique and special for her. So it is helpful in any situation to have confirmation of such things as ‘what it is like’, ‘how it may affect you’ and’ what can be expected’. Of course as the consultant you could never possibly know how your client feels or thinks but your job is to empathize and imagine and guide the client in the areas they wish to discuss.
