13 Worcester is called the ‘metropolis’ of the Hwicce in S 1254 (AD 718 × 745, possibly revised) and an Oswald lease, S 1308 (c.AD 991); see also S 1273. But the suggestion that it was also the ancient central place of the Magonsæte is mischievous, since that kingdom had its own diocese, with a see at Hereford.
