WHICH VOICES DO YOU LISTEN TO?
Shamanism tells us that we have three selves – the subconscious, conscious and higher self (or body, mind and spirit respectively). When these three work together in harmony, your energy is strong and coherent, and the result is vibrant health, happiness and loving relationships. This inner harmony corresponds to what the Institute of HeartMath calls a state of heart coherence (see Chapter 2) – that is, synchronisation between your heart, brain and autonomic nervous system.
When there is a clash between your subconscious and conscious mind, your subconscious tends to win out. After all, it can process a million times more information per second than the conscious mind, and trigger the stress response before you’re even aware of what is happening. It coshes your conscious self over the head, leaving it out cold on the floor, while your primitive brain takes over dealing with life.
Let’s suppose that you receive only messages of unconditional love in the early years of life – that your parents adore you and each other, and see the world as a safe and loving place to be, and that your household is full of joy, laughter and appreciation, and free from any tension, anxiety, blame, shame or guilt. If so, your subconscious mind will be aligned with your higher self – and you will only go into the stress response (briefly) when you face immediate physical danger. However, no one has a childhood like this!
In a normal childhood we go through many emotional traumas and pick up countless fears and negative beliefs. And in fact, much of our growth and creativity comes from the tension between our subconscious and higher self. Trauma seems to build strength and resilience, once we move beyond the freeze response, so an idyllic childhood might not be the ideal start to life. It could leave us placid but fairly stagnant, with a limited range of inner resources.124 (Since I believe that we choose our parents before we are born, this might be why so many people’s higher selves choose tough childhoods – to grow and evolve through experience.)
So here you are, with a subconscious generously stuffed with faulty beliefs, habits of thought and family patterns passed down the generations. The task of your conscious self (ego), which is suspended between the subconscious and higher self, is to choose which voice to listen to. The voice of love, or the voice of fear? How many of your 60,000 thoughts per day are anxious, defensive, stuck, critical, guilt ridden or repetitive? How many of your thoughts are loving, joyful, enthusiastic, appreciative, forward-looking and creative? How often do you think about the worst that could happen, rather than the best that could happen? How often do you beat yourself up, rather than loving and supporting yourself ? Which voices do you listen to?
