Chapter 11

The street in front of the girls’ apartment building was completely silent when I exited through the front doors. If it hadn’t been for all the corpses still inside the lobby, there would have been no way to know that seven vampires had just attacked us.

But since I couldn’t hear anyone else on the street, I figured that the girls would be safe enough until I could come back with a vehicle. I wished that I could have brought them all with me whenever I had to go out for supplies, but as much as I hated to let them out of my sight, I knew it was safer for them to stay in the apartment.

At least for now.

If the fires off in the distance started to spread any faster, we might be fucked, but we’d figure that out whenever we had to. And besides, by the time the fires spread to this section of Brooklyn Heights, I planned to already have a vehicle so we could be on our way out of the city.

Of course, first we would have to check on Isaac, and if he was still alive, we would make room for him in the car and then we’d all head out of the city together.

I just hoped that Natalie was right about her brother. She’d said that he was more afraid of needles than she was, so that should mean that he hadn’t gotten the vaccine. And the last time he’d talked to her on the phone, he had sounded like himself, so there was a good chance he was still a human, and hopefully, he was still alive, too.

I walked quickly down the street in the direction of the parking garage for the apartment building that Catherine had mentioned. It was a few blocks away, but it was after midnight, so the neighborhood was pretty quiet. The wind was surprisingly cold, but I just picked up the pace so it wouldn’t bother me.

Still, the wind made me think of the woman on the fifth floor who had tried to go down the fire escape, and I wondered if she had made it safely back to her hiding spot after I left her. If she was still alive, then there had to be other humans who had somehow survived, too, maybe even in our apartment building or the one right across from us.

They might have gotten lucky so far, but I didn’t think they would be able to survive on their own for much longer. And once Kowalsky or any of the other vampire gang assholes moved into this section of Brooklyn Heights, they’d really be fucked. In fact, if someone like Kowalsky got a hold of them, they’d probably wish that they had died in the initial slaughter.

But even though I’d tried my best to convince the woman on the fifth floor to come with us, I couldn’t force her to let me protect her. Well, I could have thrown her over my shoulder
