Back at the farmhouse, Colonel Rondon, the son of a slave from the upper plains of Venezuela, was ordered to ride out with his troops in an effort to save the republic. Even though his fellow commander Colonel Carbajal hesitated, Rondon trotted out with just 14 men. O'Leary thought them 'the most skilful lancers of the Llanos'.9 Wheeling round Sandes and his troops, they charged the royalist centre, their horses' hooves throwing up clods of earth as they raced up the slope. Buoyed by the sight, Sandes led his men alongside them in the attack. Disorganized after their last drive forward, the royalists were unprepared when Rondon's Lancers plunged into their ranks; and when the Black Rifles charged in beside them, throwing themselves against the enemy bayonets 'with fury', the fighting in the centre deteriorated into a confused melee.10 At the head of his men, Sandes had his horse killed under him and he was later shot through the thigh.11 Bleeding profusely from two wounds, he became too weak to stand. Even so, he 'could not be prevailed to quit the field'.12 Leaning against the carcass of his horse, the 25-year old from Kerry vowed to stay with his men until the end.
