SUBJECT: On the plane

Sent you a text from the car rental place, but since I’ve got a few minutes before they make me put my phone away, I thought I’d email. Sorry for being such a spaz this morning! I’m feeling better now that the meds and caffeine are kicking in. Tell Jeremy hi for me and thanks for letting me crash with you guys.

Sorry for not replying to the text—I was visiting my buddy over in the main hospital. I brought him the puzzle book you and I picked up at the museum store. He loved it, so good call, man. Said he’d never seen games quite like these. Now I’m kicked back with Jeremy, eating the chocolate you brought from Germany while we watch the game. Jeremy says thanks for bringing enough for us to share—we’ve got our guy Larry in here with us to root the Lakers on. I know you’re not really a sports guy, but maybe we could play this basketball game I’ve got sometime. It’s hella fun and a nice break from the first-person shooters when you want something different.

P.S. You got a fun seatmate this time?

You just want another excuse to kick my ass. I’ve played some sports sims before, but I suck. Glad you guys liked the chocolate! I’m going to send you some Space Villager swag for your buddies, including the guy in the hospital. I’ll send you a box next week.

P.S. Don’t worry, no flirting with my seatmate. It’s a teen girl and the music coming from her iPod scares me. I think she’s famous on the Disney Channel but I’m not asking.

I never said no flirting! And bring on the free stuff. Larry’s kids should be up next weekend, so if you don’t mind tossing something extra in the box, that would be awesome.

Josiah frowned at his phone when he checked his messages while waiting for his mom outside baggage claim. Of course Ryan hadn’t said no flirting. God forbid he do something so close to boyfriend behavior. He should just be happy that Ryan wanted to see him again. And kiss. And hopefully more than kiss. He understood why Ryan didn’t want a relationship—being too burned by his last relationship, too invested in his rehab, too not-that-into Josiah, too something—but it still stung.

Buzz. Josiah looked down, expecting to see a text from his mom saying she was there, but instead the message was from Ryan.

My sheets still smell like you and I think my pillow misses your abuse. He’d attached a selfie of him making a sad face in bed.

Josiah’s grin had to be wide enough to split the bench he was sitting on in half. On second thought, maybe things weren’t hopeless. He just had to convince Ryan he needed Josiah around on a more permanent basis. And he needed to do it subtly, which so wasn’t his strong suit, but he’d try for Ryan.
