Occurs when people say one thing and mean another; a public and a hidden message sent in the same transaction. For example:

Adult to Adult (overt or public message): “I see you have won even more awards for your other clients this year.”

Critical Parent to Child (covert or hidden message): “You failed to win awards on our account. It’s your fault.”
