Spearfisherman John Tolmie

After joining the military in 1990, John Tolmie became a salvage Navy diver, working as a salvage diver, training submariners, and repairing Navy SEAL vessels. Along the way he met a man named Ulysses Marrerro, who was from the Dominican Republic and an expert spear-fisherman. Tolmie learned the skill from him, and learned to free-dive with a weight belt and neoprene wet suit, waiting on the bottom with his spear-gun to let the fish come to him. He eats every fish he catches, and turns some into “fish prints” using a Japanese printing technique called Gyotaku. “I get to enjoy the ocean,” he says. “I get to see these beautiful animals underwater, and choose a fish I would like to harvest for myself and my family.” This sustainable sport has nearly the same rules as rod-and-reel fishing, with a few prohibitions, and is catching on with others along the coast.
