This advertisement for the Boston Garden Ski Show of 1936 shows how the European ambiance attracted attention: Rudolf Friedrich is “direct from the Austrian Alps.” He comes from St. Anton, home to Hannes Schneider, Skimeister to the world. He will teach you “Christys” after you have visited the inn in “our Tyrolean Village.”

Two of the great personages of New England skiing appear like fashion models in this 1939 photograph. Sig Buchmayr, one-time resident impresario at Peckett’s, wears the required European costume of the day. Hannes Schneider, the Alpine world’s most renowned teacher, is wearing boots named for him. The boots were made by another immigrant, Peter Limmer.
