Technique #2

Neck Method: No doubt, 200 feet of 10.5-mm is a lot of rope. It can be a serious workout to hand coil that much, especially if you are already pumped from climbing. And some people can’t hold that many strands in their hand. The solution is neck coiling, described here as a single coil although the rope can also be doubled.

Hang the rope around your neck with the end about hip level on your left side. Pinch the rope with the right hand at the same level. Grab the rope with your left hand and raise it up over your head to make a loop. Drop your left hand and pinch the new strand and cast the rope around your neck with the right hand (photo 4.6.A). Repeat until the entire rope is hanging neatly butterflied around your neck (photo 4.6.B). With a little practice, you can pick up the speed and look like a whirling Dervish. Duck your head and lift the rope off with either hand.
