Other centuries built cathedrals!

With arches, domes, and turrets

that spire into low heaven.

They drew faces out of eons of stone

and then gave every face eyes

brimming with non-questions:

Should they stay? Or should they go?

(Go where? Go how? It was the picture

of vanity.) Other centuries hung bells

strung with smaller bells as close as they could

get to an overlooking God so that

God might hear the racket

of the ground, the shakes of bronze

hitting bronze, or iron on iron,

whiplashing the wind some days hourly.

It brought the people together,

like the crumbs of a tablecloth, lifted

by its corners and carried off.
