Chapter Fifteen

ALL HELL broke loose Monday morning in a major, major way. I was on my way to work when Cristian called. I answered with my Bluetooth.

“What’s up?”

“You haven’t heard?”

“I didn’t watch the news this morning.”

“Come to city hall and you’ll see.” He hung up without explaining further. I turned around and headed to city hall instead of the station and also turned on the local news. I caught it midbroadcast.

“The body was found on the steps of Reno City Hall,” the broadcaster said. “Not a pretty sight at all. By now there are pictures all over the Internet of the murder victim. Check out our website for the images and feel free to submit your own.”

A dead body had been dumped, and though I suspected the identity of the victim, I didn’t get the name until after a minute-long commercial break that felt more like an hour.

“In case you’re just tuning in, the body of missing Councilman Palmer Fitzpatrick was found at city hall this morning. He was naked and covered in gashes.”

Fucking hell. Victim four was a local celebrity. Cristian was going to have a helluva time keeping the killer a secret for much longer.

I pulled up near a police car, pushed past a crowd of people, and was grateful to see a cop who recognized me. He allowed me past the crime-scene tape, and I headed for the body, which had now been covered up. Cristian saw me and stalked over.

“It’s Fitzpatrick?” I asked.

His cloudy face gave me the answer. “This motherfucker is sincerely pissing me off. We need to catch him, or the list of his victims is just going to get longer and longer.”

“I’ll get back on it right away,” I said. “I’ll review all the footage again.”

Cristian put a finger to his lips. “Don’t mention that. I don’t want the press knowing. They’re going to get their hands on other information, but I’d like to keep that secret in our back pocket.”

“Got it.” I glanced around, hoping no one had heard our conversation. Off to my left was a reporter for one of the television stations—Chad Roach. His surname fit him well, because he was famous for employing dirty tricks to get what he wanted. I doubted he could’ve heard us from that distance, but our eyes met, and he smirked at me for a second. Had he heard? I had no way to tell for sure.

The van came and removed the body, and eventually the crowd dissipated. I ambled around, eyes on the ground. I wasn’t sure what I was searching for, but I’d recognize it when I found it. Near the street I kicked some trash, and the sun glinted off something. I took a second peek, kneeled, and eyed a button. Exactly like the one I’d found near the scene of the previous crime. I bagged and tagged it, then headed to the station to start a long day at work.

Just as everyone assumed, there was a card shoved into Fitzpatrick’s ass.
