CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX
Damien had Joe call the lab. He wanted updates on where all the evidence stood with the dead priest and on the heart left at his door. He phoned the captain and gave him a quick update. He informed him of the visits to the two remaining priests on the list and what they told them. He discussed the most recent killing. Although it veered off course from the other murders, Damien assured him the same killer had committed the latest crime. He looked at his watch and had enough time to call his brother Nicky.
âHey Nicky, you got anything yet?â
âNo, not yet. Iâm working on it, give me some time. Dillonâs vehicle upgrades should be done in a week or so.â
âAlright. Thanks. Give Mama a hug for me.â Damienâs face brightened when Joe walked in followed by Dillon. âHey, babe.â He came around his desk to kiss her.
Joe frowned. âYou never kiss me when I come in your office.â
âAnd I never will. What did you learn from the lab, any updates?â Damien asked.
Dillon listened to Joe rattled off the labâs findings. âMartin, the priest killed this morning, had the same Dymphna medal stuffed in what was left of his head. Theyâre going through the evidence in trace; they arenât finding much. They found one synthetic hair on the priest, bolstering our disguise theory.â
Joe turned toward Dillon. âDo you want the update on your heart or do you want to go over the priest stuff first?â
Dillonâs eyebrows furrowed together. âIâd prefer to hear the priest case first.â She regarded Damien. âYou think this last priest was killed by the same killer but for a different reason?â
âI do. The killer bludgeoned Father Martin. Rage fueled this murder. The other two priests died in very premeditated manners. One for gambling, one for sex. The verses left at the scenes point directly to the sins the priests committed.
âThe verse left at this last scene doesnât point to a sin. It references someone not doing his job. Sister Webster, who spoke with Father Martin before he died, witnessed an exchange between Martin and our suspect, she thought he knew the young man. It looked to her as if they were having a conversation.â
Damien ran a hand through his hair. âSister Webster thought she heard him say something like, âyou didnât do your job.â To which the priest responded, âI didnât knowâ Something like that anyway.â
Dillon reached over and took the piece of paper from in front of Damien. She read the verse the killer wrote on the wall. âLet me see all the verses.â She re-read each of those. She studied the pictures of all three dead priests.
Damien watched with amusement as she mumbled to herself. She took a piece of paper from his notepad and scribbled a few things. He loved watching her work.
She looked up to see their expressions. âStop staring at me like that. You know I like to shift things around in my head.â
âI didnât say anything,â Damien said.
âNeither did I,â responded Joe.
