THE STUDY

The study explored seventh-graders’ conceptions of links as they composed multiple hypermedia documents throughout the school year. Ten students were selected as participants in an effort to discover in some detail the evolution of student beliefs about links (what are they? what is their purpose? how are they used in design?). Semistructured interviews, hypermedia compositions, and other student data were collected five times during the school year in order to understand how conceptions of links evolved as students became more skilled in composing in hypermedia. The study was set in a larger context of two teachers’ attempts to restructure classroom learning toward constructivist process-oriented practices that assist students with knowledge transformation (Erickson, 1997).
