3 Ontology Alignment Problem: Basic Concepts

An ontology is an explicit specification of a conceptualization [19], i.e., the objects, concepts, and other entities that are presumed to exist in some area of interest and the relationships that hold them [17]. Formally, all components of an ontology (concepts, objects and relationships) are generally denoted with the term entity [3]. Born primarily as means to model knowledge, ontologies are being exploited very successfully to allow knowledge exchange among people, organisations and software agents. However, for many reasons, different people will tend to use different ontologies [20] to represent the same domain giving birth to the so-called semantic heterogeneity problem. In literature, different types of heterogeneity have been identified, mainly split in the following classes [1]:Syntactic heterogeneity: differences at the language level such as the exploitation of knowledge representation formalisms but the meaning is the same;
