Basis Functions

If we're going to integrate the governing equation over each element, we need some representation of the parameters, which vary over an element in a non-trivial way. For flow with constant properties, this is would be the pressure and velocity components. We may add more parameters later in order to accurately handle such things as turbulence. This is where the linear and quadratic basis functions from the preceding chapter come into the process. A search of the Web will reveal that a variety of basis functions have been used with the FEM, but these are the simplest, which is why they were presented first.
