Setting Up Security
In the router’s configuration utility, open the Security section and choose a security mode. You might also be prompted to choose an authentication type or encryption technique. In most cases, the best choice is WPA2-PSK with AES as the encryption technique, as in Figure 10-14.

WPS
The easiest way to set up a client to access a secured router is with Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS). There are a few different WPS methods; the method you use depends on the device’s capabilities. With push-button configuration (PBC), you push a button on the router to place it in a special mode where it accepts new connections for a brief time. During those few minutes anyone can connect wireless devices to the router without knowing its password. The device and the router come to an understanding, and the device is approved for future use of the router. Not all routers support WPS, but many of the SOHO routers sold today do.
A second WPS method requires a device to enter a personal identification number (PIN) to join the network. The SOHO router might have a PIN sticker, or it may generate a different PIN each time. The third WPS method uses near-field communication (NFC), which is a very short-range wireless networking technology that allows devices to connect when they are within a few inches of each other. Chapter 9 discussed NFC.
You can enable or disable WPS. Find the WPS setting in the router’s security properties and choose Enabled or Disabled.
When you finish configuring the router, close the browser window to exit the configuration utility.
