Zones

Many CSPs use slightly different naming conventions when it comes to their infrastructure. The two terms that come up the most are zones and availability zones (AZs). In general, a zone is equivalent to a data center or a group of data centers that function as a single unit. Each data center will have its own security and redundant systems.

Let’s talk about what we mean when we use the term redundant systems. This is an important topic to understand because it leads to one of the biggest reasons to move to the cloud. CSPs have to plan and build robust redundant steps for every part of the infrastructure. Redundancy provides fault tolerance, which we will discuss later. For now, keep in mind that fault tolerant means that the system is able to keep working even after multiple component systems have failed.
