From Cyprus

a herald came

Idaeusswift messenger

“From the rest of Asiaundying fame

Hector and his cohorts lead her, dancing-eyed,

from sacred Thebes and out of Plakos,

delicate Andromeda, in ships over the salt

sea, with many golden bracelets and clothing

shining purple, necklaces, jewels of many colors,

countless silver cups and ivory.”

He spoke, and Hector’s old father rose nimbly,

and the word spread throughout the broad city

to his dear ones. The Trojan women yoked mules

to their gliding chariots and went out in crowds

together with the slender-ankled girls,

Priam’s daughters in a separate procession,

and the bachelors hitched up horses to their chariots,

young heroes in their might

charioteers

like gods

holy throng

to Ilion

and there rose

flute’s melody sweet with the lyre

the rattle of castanets, and shrill the maidens

sang the holy song and it reached bright heaven

eerie sound

and everywhere in the streets

mixing-bowls and cups

myrrh and cassia and frankincense blended,

and the older women with their alleluias

and all the men chanting the paeon

calling on Apollo, his lyre his bright bow,

praised Hector and Andromache, praised them as gods.
