Mono tarinai means that something is lacking, leaving one with a sense of dissatisfaction. Tarinai by itself means insufficient, while mono tarinai refers to something lacking from a psychological point of view. Compounds with mono include mono osoroshii (frightening, horrible), mono sabishii (lonesome, dreary), mono sawagashii (noisy, boisterous), and mono shizuka (quiet, tranquil).
