Eighteen

My phone was ringing. I reached for it and banged my arm against the nightstand next to my bed. Not hard, but enough to remind me I had broken it yesterday. I had to use my left hand to lift it up. The call ended. I looked at my phone. It was 5 a.m., and the caller had been Gabriel. I called him back.

“Well, we got two last night,” Gabriel said when he answered. “The Devil’s DNA came back as a match to Jurgen Schneider. The Overland Park PD compelled a sample from Tom Slater, the guy that threatened Fiona over the phone last night, and it was a familial match to five murders in the area. Tom Slater’s brother is the East Valley Strangler.” Gabriel sounded thrilled.

“I don’t know why you’re so happy about that, he isn’t local,” I said.

“Miller sent a fugitive recovery team to get him in Colorado, and he’s in custody. It’s a win,” Gabriel told me. “Fiona went to see Slater in custody and he gave her this long sob story about how they were abused as children and whatnot.”

“I hope Fiona told him lots of people are abused and don’t threaten to kill US Marshals over the phone,” I said.

“She read him the riot act.”

“If his wife leaves him and takes their kids, I’ll consider that a win, too,” I said sleepily. My arm was throbbing. I reached for the glass of water on my bedside table and the bottle of pills. “Is that all you wanted?” I asked after a moment.

“Yes,” Gabriel said.

“Ok, how long do I have until the driver arrives? Who is it?” I asked.

“Xavier wants to examine you, so he’s going to bring you in if you pass his exam. If you don’t, you can’t come in,” Gabriel replied hastily.

“Huh.” I hung up on Gabriel and started moving around the room in the dark getting stuff together for the day. My mom was an early riser. I opened the door to see if she was up and turned on my bedroom light. She had the only bedroom on the ground floor. I could hear heavy snoring. Multiple types of heavy snoring. There were three bedrooms, a master bathroom and another bathroom upstairs. My mom usually slept with her door opened, but she didn’t snore like what I was hearing. I stepped out into the hall and found a nightlight plugged into one of the outlets. We didn’t normally use a nightlight up here except on the stairs. All the upstairs bedroom doors were closed except mine. I’d left Nyleena snoring in the armchair. Had she not gotten up and gone home, I wondered? Had she instead come upstairs to sleep in one of the spare bedrooms? I stood outside the bedroom door, definitely a male snore. Not Nyleena. I went back to my bedroom and grabbed a gun. I went back to the door and put my ear against it. Listening. I went to the other closed bedroom door and someone was snoring behind it, too.
