Politics as Rhetoric

In 1933 America was struggling through one of the lowest points of the Great Depression. The stock market had crashed a few years earlier and people all over the nation were out of work, standing in line at soup kitchens, and uncertain about what the future held. Franklin D. Roosevelt, a Harvard-educated man from a wealthy family, had won the 1932 presidential election and was scheduled to give his inaugural address on March 4, 1933. Roosevelt was known for his charisma and sense of humor, but he wasn’t known as an orator or policymaker of any great depth. However, at a time when Americans needed inspiration, leadership, and a path forward, Roosevelt gave what is considered one of the greatest speeches of the twentieth century.
