Compelling reading
This concept of a good read brings me to the next aspect of teaching my students communicatively. My students are learning Latin because they want to, and because they do have very specific goals in mind, namely their research texts. If I can harness their inherent interest in their subject by using texts relevant to them, then I have already invoked their intrinsic motivation, which Ash (2019) notes as important (although Ryan and Deci 2000 remind us that the differences are neither clear-cut nor necessarily as important as is sometimes made out). Following the work of Krashen (1981), in the literature on CI, the need for texts to be compelling is always made clear (Ash 2019; Bracey 2019; Patrick 2019; Rogers 2019). The texts my students bring me, however, are far beyond the linguistic level they will achieve over the course. The extent of the challenge risks being extremely demotivating. I have so far dealt with this issue in two ways. First, I have been using LLPSI to give the students exposure to comprehensible Latin building from the beginnersâ level every lesson, to build their fluency. With their Latin antennae tuned in for the day, I have relied on high motivation levels and a willingness to be led carefully in their reading in order to then approach original texts. Secondly, I have bridged LLPSI to their chosen texts by using some texts of my own finding. These include Alcuinâs riddles for teaching Charlemagne. They are largely simple, elegant, and charming, and make an excellent starting text:
