WHERE YOU’LL FIND IT: Gardens, alleys, fencelines, roadsides, streambanks, railroad tracks, ditches and disturbed areas. It prefers partial to full sun and can grow from pavement cracks. Three-Seeded Mercury is found in the eastern half of the U.S.; in our region it is largely absent from the Dakotas and the northern parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan.

LEAVES: Elliptic, with tapered bases and sharply tapered tips; they often look somewhat diamond-shaped. Leaves are up to 4 inches long and a bit less than half as wide, and grow alternately on thin stalks that are up to 1½ inches long. Edges are coarsely toothed. Leaves are sparsely hairy and green, turning copper-colored in fall.
