Itsy-Bitsy

Brown body knitted through

the white webbing.

The infinite geometric proofs

are not mathed or equated

by any man’s minding.

Only we are

watching the predator spool prey

my daughter & me & her

wriggle against my chest.

She reaches toward the venom

of what she does not know

would surely kill her.

A small death of vessels

& each organ within

her tiny abdomen

my everything.

I was singing a song to her

one she insists

I made up

about the itsy bitsy.

A baby girl who would climb

every water spout

& the rain & the rain

would be everywhere

blue in spring & summer

she falls into new clothes

the knitted silk

of a spider’s song,

what helps put her to sleep.

Will one day puncture the soft flesh

of my tongue

every lullaby can wring

itself into a final cry

though from so far away

you don’t know

if it’s mine

or my daughter’s

or no one

at all.
