Date Night
It was Friday night and Gerald and I were in clean clothes headed up to Mary and Carrieâs apartment. We were in that silver elevator, it whooshed smoothly up to the fourth floor and let us out.
When Gerald asked me how the group project was going, I told him it was going just fine even though it wasnât. He said his group was finished.
But enough about school, Gerald and I had finally found an activity both girls agreed on for date night, and boy was I surprised. We were going to a haunted house.
Not one of those hokey haunted houses with plastic Frankensteins and dudes with fake chainsaws yelling at you. This one was real, it had all kinds of legends surrounding it. Gerald had found it on the internet and randomly told me about it at lunch the other day. I suggested we pitch it to the girls as a date and surprisingly, they both said yes.
I knocked on the apartment door and Mary and Carrie came out, both dressed and ready to go. That surprised me, I felt sure weâd be waiting on them while they primped. Mary wore cut-off jean shorts and a light brown t-shirt and white sneakers. Carrie wore tan shorts, a black top and her sneakers matched Maryâs. Carrie had her hair in a long blonde ponytail, Maryâs was down and freshly brushed. They both looked hot.
âHey fellas,â Mary said.
âBoys,â Carrie said.
I smiled and greeted them both, Carrie with a short hug and Mary with a tighter hug and a kiss on the cheek. We rode the elevator down to my car and we all piled in. Mary and me in the front, Carrie and Gerald in the back.
âWhich way?â I asked.
âTake the highway straight out of town,â Gerald said. âThen a mile after the intersection with Fifteenth Street take a right on a dirt lane called Peacock Avenue.â
âPeacock?â Mary said. âSounds terrifying.â
âThe Internet said the last owner raised them. He was the one thatââ
âCut peopleâs toes off,â Mary said, interrupting Gerald.
âAmong other things,â Gerald said. âWhen they finally caught him and started digging they found victim after victim all over his property, nearly all of them were missing something, all women.â
âWasnât he trying to make a perfect one, like a combination of all his favorite parts?â
âYeah,â Gerald said.
âI know one of those,â I said.
âAww,â Mary said. âArenât you sweet.â
âI was thinking about Miss O.â
Mary slapped at my arm while I laughed.
âOkay, coming up,â Gerald said. âItâll be on your right.â
The car got quiet all of a sudden. I saw a green sign, hanging at an angle to the road, it was old and bent.
âIs that it?â I asked.
Mary leaned forward and squinted as I slowed the car.
âPeacock Avenue,â she said.
I turned onto the road and the roar of gravel under the tires sounded as we drove down the narrow single-lane. We hit a rut that almost made my head hit the roof. I slowed down. It was dark back here.
âI see the house,â Gerald said.
