I was not gone long, but I returned to find Riley diligently stirring three pots of chili. “Um, weren’t there only two pots on when I left?”

“Yep. Darth Vader demanded a third.”

“Ahhh.”

“Yeah, he nearly flipped when you weren’t here. Guy’s dramatic.” Riley gave the chili a pretty aggressive stir.

I laughed. “Well, that is the consensus opinion. How’d you start another pot?”

“Adam did it. Kept the lightsaber away.”

“That death grip thing too.”

I smiled as Riley rubbed his neck. “It was a little touchy there for a moment.”

He went back to stirring the chili. “We decided you need a helper.”

I thought about what he wasn’t saying. There are lots of ways to manage people. In this instance I felt protected though. “That would be, ah, helpful.”

“That’s the idea,” Riley quickly agreed. I guessed he was relieved I hadn’t gotten upset.

“Ok. Well, if you’re good right now, then I’ll get a head start on tomorrow. At the rate we’re going through it, we’re going to need more chili than I’d planned.”

“Whatever you need.” Riley kept his word.

We got through the rest of the night without any more John sightings.
