Chapter 18

When Clay and Ricki entered the hotel restaurant at 7:00 a.m. the next morning looking for some breakfast, they were the only customers in the place. They were still looking over the menu when Anchorman showed up, his hand stifling a yawn as he made his way to the table.

When the waitress came over, Ricki settled for coffee and toast while both men ordered their usual bacon and eggs. As the young woman scurried off to put in their orders, Ricki picked up the mug filled with fresh coffee and held it under her nose, enjoying the aroma before she took a long sip.

“What do you think about the Campbell brothers?” Clay asked.

Anchorman lifted a hand to cover another yawn. “Walter says they wouldn’t do it.”

Ricki wished she could simply take the word of a fellow Marine the way Anchorman did, but unfortunately, the world didn’t always work that way.

“They’re the first names Whitcomb came up with, and we have to give some weight to the local authority,” she said. “On the other hand, no one has mentioned one of the brothers without tossing in the other as well, and we only found one set of tracks.”

“It’s possible one stayed with the snowmobile while the other hiked through the woods to surprise the group,” Clay pointed out.

“Maybe,” Ricki said, annoyed when both men grinned back at her. “All right. That doesn’t make any sense. If you have two guns, why bother to sneak up on the group? The brothers are known in town. If they’d rolled up to the parking lot, there wouldn’t have been any reason for the volunteers or Ranger Adler to panic. And all the Campbells would have to have done was wait until everyone was gathered in one place and then mow them down. With two guns, no one would have gotten away.” She shrugged. “And what was the point of the animal remains and the note? According to Tyler Bord, the brothers have a history of protesting against any kind of curbs on hunting, which is what the note implied. Why leave something that would point directly at themselves?”

Clay picked up his coffee mug and considered the steaming contents for a moment. “I think we’ve both stated before that criminals aren’t always the brightest crayons in the box.”

Ricki smiled. “That’s true, but this crime doesn’t strike me as having one of those dumber-than-dirt types behind it.”

“Me either,” Clay said quietly. “I’m thinking it was a ‘get even’ thing, with Todd Hertzman at the center.”

As the young waitress swung into the room, balancing a tray of food, Anchorman moved his mug aside to clear the space in front of him. “So I guess we’ll be paying a visit to LoJack tonight.”

“LoJack?” Ricki gave him a puzzled look, then laughed. “Pumpjack. You mean The Pumpjack bar.”

The big Marine shrugged and dug into his food like a starving man. “LoJack, pumpjack, what’s the big difference? It’s some kind of jack.”

“A LoJack is how the police recover stolen vehicles,” Ricki said, laughing when Clay gave Anchorman a mournful look.
