Chapter 23

Bridgette sat in her car in the carport at the back of the Summit Sports Bar and contemplated ringing Delray. It was well after six p.m. and she was still a little rattled by the encounter with the two masked men. As she sat and reviewed the incident in her mind, she decided she first needed answers to some of her questions. She picked up her mobile phone and dialed a local number from memory. The phone was answered after three rings.

“Jack Sutton.”

“Good evening Jack, this is Bridgette Cash. I came to interview you yesterday about John Tyson.”

“And are you making any progress Detective?”

“I think so. I discovered a file hidden out the back of John’s house late yesterday. It included some photos I believe he took out in the mountains that I would like to show you and get your opinion on.”

“Swing by whenever you like. I’d be happy to take a look.”

“There’s one other thing I’d like to talk to you about if that’s okay?”

“And what’s that?”

Bridgette gave Sutton a brief rundown on the attack on Strickland in the alleyway. She concluded by saying she thought she recognized one of the assailants as Sanbury police officer, Mitch Conden.

Sutton was silent and Bridgette wondered whether she had reached out to the wrong local.

She continued, “I’m not sure how the police force really works around here, but I’d like to ask someone local that I trust a few questions.”

“You eat chicken, Bridgette?”

“Yes.”

“I’m just pulling a casserole out of the oven. Why don’t you stop by and join me for dinner? I can’t promise I can answer all your questions, but hopefully, I can answer some of them.”

“Thanks, Jack, but you really don’t have to feed me as well.”

“No trouble. Sounds to me like you could do with some company after what you’ve been through today.”

“Can I bring anything?”

“Just yourself.”

“I’ll be there in fifteen minutes.”

* * *

Bridgette knocked twice on the front door and was suddenly hungry as she picked up the faint aroma of apricot chicken casserole wafting out from inside the house.

Sutton opened the door and with a concerned look asked, “Are you okay?”

Bridgette responded, “I’m fine, not a scratch on me.”

“You better come in before you freeze to death.”

Bridgette thanked Sutton for seeing her on such short notice as she followed him through to a large rustic kitchen. The kitchen had a large wooden island workbench complete with a ceiling hanging rack of pots and pans. It was clean and tidy and looked like it got plenty of use. She could see a large casserole dish cooling on a rack next to the sink and said, “That smells amazing Jack.”

Sutton grinned a little as he spooned out the casserole onto two white dinner plates. “It was my mother’s family recipe. I don’t cook it that often because it feeds me for a week, but with winter almost on us, I felt in the mood.”

Sutton nodded to a shallow woven basket that contained several bread rolls as he picked up the two plates and said, “Grab the basket if you don’t mind and follow me.
