NINETEEN

Mike’s Auto Repair Shop looked a little worse for wear than it had in the footage from six years before. The green awning above the garage was faded and tatty, the gold name was barely legible, and the paintwork was peeling.

“You Mike?” Savage asked, as he and Burner walked into the garage. It stank of exhaust fumes and grease. The man working beneath the car looked up, only his head and shoulders visible, the rest of his body hidden in the inspection pit.

“Can I help you?”

“Sheriff Savage.” He showed the man his ID. “This is my associate Grayson Carter.”

Mike peered at them from under the car. “What do you want?” He wasn’t rude, just curious.

Savage cleared his throat. “We’d like to ask you about a surveillance camera outside your garage six years ago, when the shooting took place at the Burger King across the street.”

Mike frowned. “Why you askin’ me about that now? I showed it to the cop at the time, but he didn’t want it. Said they had enough evidence.”

Savage glanced at Burner. “Which cop?”

“The one working the case. I can’t remember his name.” Savage’s heart sank. A whole crew of officers had worked the burglaries. Mostly detectives, but a couple uniforms as well. Even Savage couldn’t remember them all.

“Was it a man?”

“Yeah, shorter than you. Brown hair. Uniform.”

Unfortunately, that didn’t narrow it down. “White guy?”

“Yeah.” Mike climbed out from the grease pit and wiped the sweat off his face, leaving a dirty smear.

“Did the detective actually see the footage?”

“Sure did. He viewed it in my office from start to finish. Terrible business, that woman getting shot and all. Especially since she had those young tykes at home.”

Savage didn’t need reminding. “He watched it, then told you he didn't need it?”

The man gave an impatient nod. “That’s what I said.”

“It doesn’t make sense.” Savage looked at Burner. “Why would a cop ignore evidence?”

“He might if he were covering something up,” Burner murmured.

They had to see what was on the tape. Savage turned back to Mike. “You still have it?”

“I think so. It’s not something you throw away, you know. I thought about taking it to the press, but then it didn’t seem right, considering how that poor woman died.”

Ironically, if he had taken it to the press, the outcome may have been different. Curiosity burned in Savage’s gut. Burner looked equally eager.

“Can we see it?” Savage asked.

“Give me a second. I’ll see if I can find it.”

They followed the auto mechanic into his corner office at the back of the garage. Glass screens separated it from the main working area, so he could still look out onto what was happening while he sat at his desk. Savage noticed one other guy working on a Ford Explorer in the back, but that seemed to be the only staff Mike had.

“Just the two of you?” Savage asked, more to make conversation than anything else.

“Yeah, Timmy’s my brother-in-law. We used to have a couple more guys but had to lay them off.
