Chapter Twelve

The following two nights were the same. A vampire came with a finger; I killed it.

The boys didn’t speak at all now; each one too wrapped up in his own private hell. It was futile to think they could get Ry back from a vampire army.

I went out after executing the vampire and drank. I stuck to people who were committing a crime. It was easy; there was a lot of corruption in London.

I was back to full strength now, and the boys didn’t even notice. They wouldn’t have sex with me, so I pleasured myself after my feed. I knew how Delphine felt.

It was the fifth night Ry had been away from us, and he had lost four fingers.

But tonight was different. I sensed the vampire coming a mile off. It was an old one, not one of the new abominations I’d been destroying on the balcony. This one was fast. Very fast. But it wasn’t Cassius or Hugh. No, this was a different vampire.

As he approached, I suddenly recognised his smell; he was the one that murdered my lovers in the catacombs two hundred years ago. I felt myself stiffen as he neared and went out onto the balcony to meet him.

He was a blur even to me as he vaulted the wall and jumped up onto the balcony. A blur, but not invisible. This vampire was fast, maybe even faster than Sanson.

‘Françoise,’ he said, bowing.

I nodded. I did not know his name. He was an average looking man, under six feet, medium build, with long hair—as most vampires of his era had—tied back into a ponytail. His face was scarred with pox from his human life. He was not a handsome vampire, but something about him commanded my attention. He was almost a pureblood, almost an old one, but like Karl, he must have been transformed at a later age in his human life by a vampire that was not quite… right.

‘Karl sent me because he is sick of you killing his men.’

‘And what makes you think that I will not kill you?’ I said, trying to keep my cool. I wanted to rip this vampire’s head off more than anything. Although Karl was responsible for my betrayal and my lovers' death, this vampire was the hand that did it.

The vampire laughed. It was a genuine, hearty laugh. He did not think I could do it!

‘We know all about you now, Françoise. Your lover, Ry, has told us everything.’

‘What is there to know?’ I asked, looking down my nose at him.

The vampire laughed again, leaning casually on the balcony railings.

‘He told us everything today. He was easy to break; we didn’t have to try hard at all. We probably should have asked him earlier. Spared him. He may have kept his fingers.’

I gritted my teeth and tried to remain calm, but inside I was screaming.

‘He told us that you are weak from your two-hundred-year sleep. That you may not hunt humans because Flynn does not allow
