CHAPTER 8
I was waving goodbye to Riane from a distance until finally, she was out of view. Still, I couldn’t believe I was actually leaving the military base this early.
I settled down, remained quiet in the back seat of the four-by-four vehicle while Commander Tristan Blake was in the passenger’s seat, speaking with the driver who was also armed and in uniform.
After giving instructions to our two companions, he remained quiet as if he was not aware of my presence.
Oh, the evil is giving you a break, my subconscious teased, enjoying the serenity of the moment.
The other soldier who was right beside me tried to break the ice by initiating a conversation, but I was not in the mood for chit-chat. I was thinking of a better way to save Phil while I was still in the area. But how would I even find him? Indeed, the only answer to my problem was the deadly poison I was carrying inside the purse in my hand.
But I couldn’t bear killing and taking innocent lives, and I couldn’t bear to see Phil’s lifeless body, either. My mother used to tell me that I should always consider the welfare of the majority, but this time, I didn’t think it was really applicable.
Phil was very close to me, and he also had a family waiting for him just like everybody at the base.
I clutched my purse tighter and looked away, memorizing each path we were crossing just in case I had to go back and trace my way back into the mountain. I knew it was a stupid idea to search for the enemies, sneak around and rescue Phil on my own. That way, I didn’t need to choose between my loyalty to my friend and loyalty to my countrymen.
Are you being serious right now? My mind protested. You can’t even protect yourself from Blake.

After a three-hour journey, we finally arrived at the mainland. Life here was different but somehow alive. We headed straight to the town, where the central terminal was located. The memory of the medical team’s arrival was still vivid in my head as if I could see them standing at the platform, waiting for the military escorts.
I couldn’t help but felt a little sentimental. Phil had been the happiest that day. He was so excited to work with the military, but it was not happening now. All that was left to do was hope and pray that he was still as cheerful and carefree as he normally was. Moreover, I was begging the heavens to protect him until help came.

“I’m sorry, Commander, but the train left twenty minutes ago,” I heard from the employee who was trying to calm Tristan down, but I wasn’t so sure if he was succeeding. His two escorts were just glancing at each other, probably mentally discussing the upcoming mood swings again.
I shuddered as soon as they spotted me in the corner, observing the three of them back and forth.
“When is the next scheduled trip?” he asked impatiently.
