Sasha was sitting at the conference table late Sunday morning when his cell phone rang. “Morning, R.J. I’m looking for some good news. I hope that’s why you’re calling.”

“I’ve got news, but I don’t know if it’s good or bad. Somebody on our list got run over by a hit-and-run in his apartment parking lot last night.”

Sasha stood up. “Who?”

“Adrian Wolenski.” R.J. paused. “911 got a call around 5 a.m. reporting a male lying in an apartment parking lot on the east side of town. He was run over several times.”

“Is he in the hospital?”

“He was found dead. ME’s best guess was sometime around midnight last night. It got down to freezing overnight, so she can’t be more accurate on the time.”

“Is that where he lived?”

“Yes. Wolenski rented a townhouse at that address.”

“You live in his world. What do you think happened?”

“It’s hard to say, Sasha. It wasn’t accidental.”

“If it was murder—”

“I don’t think there’s any question about that.”

“Who would kill him?”

“It could be a disgruntled customer. A rival drug dealer. Right now, it’s tough to say. He could have been caught messing with someone’s wife or girlfriend.”

“We’re talking about Bloomington, Illinois, R.J. People here don’t kill other people over things like this.”

“Times have been tough the last few years. Anything’s possible. It wouldn’t surprise me.”

“Yeah, I’m just not seeing it, R.J.”

“I just wanted to give you a heads-up. I’ve got another case I’m working. Why don’t you give the ME a call to find out more?”

“Thanks for the heads-up.” Sasha ended the call with the vice unit detective. He sat back down at the conference room table just as Darcie walked in. “R.J. just called to tell me Adrian Wolenski is dead. He was run over multiple times in the parking lot where he lives.”

Darcie sat down at the conference table. “Any idea who did it?”

“No idea.” Sasha called the ME’s office to speak with Juanita. As he was on hold, he gave Darcie more details from his call with R.J.

“Hi, Sasha.”

“Darcie’s with me. I’m going to put you on speaker.”

“I assume you’re calling about Wolenski?” They could hear Juanita shuffling papers.

“Yes. Wolenski is an associate of Danny Williams, who we consider a person of interest in Ashley Cummins’s murder.”

“Okay. What do you want to know?”

“I understand that he was run over by a car multiple times.”

“Absolutely. The injuries he suffered are consistent with being struck by a car but to an extent I’ve never seen.”

“So you believe it was intentional and not accidental?” Juanita looked at the pictures in the file. “Wolenski suffered broken bones in the left leg, fractures in his right leg, and his pelvis was shattered. Both arms suffered broken and fractured bones, along with multiple broken and fractured ribs. His right lung was punctured, and he had lacerations on both kidneys and his liver. If all that wasn’t enough, the coup de grâce was his skull getting crushed.”

“Geez. Somebody must’ve really wanted to send a message.”

“I don’t have an opinion on that, Sasha. The one thing I can tell you is that whoever killed Wolenski wanted him dead in that parking lot.
