Chapter 27
Nice enough guy that Dante Ruiz was; after all, he bought me a beer and a shot of tequila. I once again felt like I was getting nowhere. I drove back across the river on the Wabasha Bridge and debated about going back to The Spot. Louie was probably still there, and maybe if I just took a night to unwind, something might pop into my head tomorrow. My next thought was maybe to call Taffy and see if she wanted to get together. I quickly deleted that idea. Even if she did want to see me, it probably meant the wicked witch from the west, Allison, would be there. In the end, I drove home.
Morton met me at the front door with his tail wagging, reminding me that, no matter how down I felt, he was always happy to see me. I let him out into the backyard and checked my refrigerator. There was half a pizza in there from a day or two ago, or maybe it was last week. I couldnât remember. I set it on the kitchen counter, grabbed a piece, and went over the pages Iâd copied for Aaron.
Morton scratching at the door got my attention. It was now dark outside, Iâd eaten the remainder of the pizza, and I knew nothing more than when I began reading. I let Morton in, tossed him a biscuit, dumped the pizza crusts in his food bowl, and started over reading the copies, again.
By the time Iâd pushed away from the copies spread out across the counter, Morton had gone upstairs to bed. Iâd eaten two fudgesicles for dessert, and I was still hungry. I got the coffee ready for the morning and went up to bed.
Amazingly, Morton had left me enough room. I slept fitfully and woke well before my alarm. The sun was up but just barely. I showered, dressed, and went downstairs. I was just about finished with the coffee when I heard Morton upstairs as he jumped off the bed and stretched. He made his appearance in the kitchen a few minutes later. I scratched him and let him out into the backyard. I let him back in for breakfast and phoned Aaron while Morton devoured his food in about three minutes.
âYeah, Dev. Whatâs up?â was how Aaron answered.
âHi, Aaron. I was going to head down to see you shortly. Iâve got the copies of those pages for you.â
âOkay, if you can bring them down in the next forty-five minutes, we can talk. Otherwise, Iâve got a meeting Iâll need to get to, and we could maybe meet later this afternoon.â
âIâll head down there right now. See you in a bit,â I said and hung up. Morton was stretched out, apparently getting ready for an after-breakfast nap, so I left him in the kitchen and hopped in my car. I thought for a moment about picking up his morning deposit and smearing it across Manningâs windshield but decided that would probably point an obvious finger at me, so I backed out of the driveway.
