“Stamps are over there,” Doff said. “That candy bar, too. Don’t spoil your supper.” She nodded toward the far counter while working the bread dough on the table. She’d knead, turn the dough ball a quarter turn, knead, turn, knead, turn. Doff could probably make bread in her sleep.

Billie pasted stamps on her letters to Leo and Denny. “Do you want this?” She held out the Seven Up bar.

“Thanks.” Doff placed the dough in a large, greased bowl, turning it over once to get it evenly coated. That way it wouldn’t stick while it was rising. “But I don’t care for them.”

Billie didn’t care for Seven Up bars, either. They were Hazel’s favorites. “Was there any mail?” Leo owed her a letter.

“In the front hall.” Doff washed the flour off her hands. “Mr. Garcia was kind enough to bring it in. I haven’t had a chance to look at it yet.”

Billie tucked the candy bar in her pocket before flipping through the stack of mail. There was a letter from Leo! She was about to tear it open when she noticed another San Francisco postmark in the pile. She set Leo’s letter down and glanced over her shoulder. Doff was still puttering in the kitchen. Billie slipped the envelope into her other pocket. “Bear and I are going out to play!” she called. Did her voice sound as guilty as she felt?

But Doff answered the way she always did. “Be back before dark.”

Billie whistled for Bear. And they were off.
