Swan read bits of the proposal out loud as I drove, mainly the parts that stunned her. “They’re giving us sixty days before we have to report,” she exclaimed. “And leave between missions.”

“I don’t know what else they’d have us do.”

“I know, but we still get paid.”

“We do?”

She read the entire paragraph out loud, and she was right. While we would be considered contractors for the first six months after we officially started working with them, we would receive a base salary regardless of whether there was an active mission or not. Once we became active, our salary would increase—hazard pay, essentially.

“I understand why McTiernan said we’d have more rewarding financial opportunities if we signed with them.”

“There will be piloting involved. Not the kind we’re used to.”

I’d anticipated that and had to admit I shared her lack of enthusiasm. “I’ve heard they have a couple of pretty nice planes. A Cirrus Vision, I think.”

“They have two,” she said without looking up from what she was reading. “And at least one Cessna.” This time, she looked over at me. “Razor told me when you were in the lavatory. He also said K19 and the Invincibles are in a competition of sorts to see who can build their fleet of aircraft the quickest but also who has the best planes.”

“That sounds nice for us.”

“Especially if we’re asked to assist with acquisition.” She wriggled her eyebrows. “I can think of worse jobs.”

I laughed. “Me too, especially if we get to test-fly them.”

“Naturally, we’d have to. Oh, a blade license is also required,” she said after skimming more of the document.

“Easy enough to get. We can do that during our sixty days.”

“I was also thinking about traveling home to England.”

I waited to see if she’d make mention of my insistence that if she went anywhere, she’d take me with her.

“I suppose it would be best to do that after we’ve gone to New York.”

I smiled. “We can go to England first.”

“I’m looking quite forward to meeting your family.”

I reached over, took her hand, and brought it to my lips. “They’re going to love you.”

She turned in her seat so she was facing me. “As much as you do?”

Since we’d exited the highway, I pulled off the road and into a parking lot.

“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have—”

I put my finger on her lips. “No one will ever love you as much as I do, Swan. As great as that love is today, tomorrow it will be more. It will continue to grow for the rest of our lives.”

Her eyes filled with tears. “Do you mean it?” she whispered.

“How can you even ask? I love you so much.” I looked up at the restaurant whose parking lot I’d pulled into. “I mean, you really have to love someone a helluva lot to mark the occasion of the first time you say ‘I love you’ parked in front of a Waffle World.”

Swan had just taken a sip of coffee and came close to spitting it out all over the K19 proposal—which only made me love her more.
