Chapter Fourteen

Saturday, April 14th.

Private Residence. White House. D.C.

Lee stepped out of the shower and was towel drying his hair when he heard his phone ringing on the dresser in the bedroom.

“Hang on,” he called out to nobody as he wrapped the towel around his waist and hurried into the next room.

He glanced at the screen and grabbed the phone, “Blaine, what’s wrong?”

“Plenty. I’m coming over before you go to the West Wing. It’s important.”

“Sure. I’m getting dressed now. Come for breakfast. I’ll wait for you.”

“Thank you. I’ll leave now. I have something to show you and it cannot wait.”

Lee quickly dressed, left the bedroom, and called to Daniel.

“What is it, sir?”

“Would you mind alerting June that Director Dunnett will arrive for breakfast. He has an emergency this morning.”

“Of course, sir. I’ll take care of it right away.”

Lee rushed to the dining room, and Gemma stood at the sideboard filling a coffee cup for him. She turned and the ever-present smile left her beautiful face.

“Your face is flushed, Lee. Are you all right?”

“Its been a hectic morning already. Director Dunnett is on his way over for breakfast. He has something so important and pressing that he can only tell me in person.”

Gemma pointed to Lee’s chair, and he sat down and let go of a breath. She placed his coffee cup in front of him and smiled. “The two of you have been meeting quite often. I know you can’t talk about security issues, but you can trust me.”

Lee smiled back at her. “That’s true. Annie wouldn’t have sent you to me otherwise. She’s a very wise woman.”

“She’s also very protective of you, Lee.”

“Yes, she is. I don’t know how I’d manage without her, and I don’t want to find out.”

“You talk to her often?”

“Every chance I get.”

Lee and Gemma were drinking coffee and chatting at the table when Daniel showed Blaine Dunnett into the dining room.

Lee got to his feet and shook Dunnett’s hand. “Please have a seat, Blaine. It must have been a rush for you to get here from Georgetown so early.”

“It was necessary to make the trip. There was little chance of you having a free moment later in the day. Your schedule is always filled.”

“So true, and this couldn’t wait?”

“Not for a second.”

“You’re making me extremely nervous.”

“No more nervous than I am at this very moment.” The director’s hands were trembling.

“Shall we speak in my study and get it over with before breakfast?” asked Lee.

“No. We definitely should eat first. Once you know what I know, there will be little taste for food.”

“I’m not sure I can eat with this—whatever it is—hanging over me like it is.”

June, the head housekeeper for the private residence, entered the dining room with one of the household staff and they served eggs Benedict with croissants warm from the oven.

After the delicious breakfast and a cup of coffee, Gemma left the room so the men could speak freely.

Director Dunnett pulled his phone out of his pocket and said, “Lukas took this
