Action speed with the ball

Movement speed without the ball

Reaction speed

Decision-making speed

Anticipation speed

Cognitive speed

When taking a closer look at these seven areas that comprise soccer speed, it becomes obvious that the approach to these factors cannot be strictly athletic, like with a 100-meter runner.

Next to genetic factors, such as muscle fiber composition and athleticism, the complexity of soccer speed can only be trained properly by including mental factors as well as tactics and technique. These, with the exception of Verheijen’s model, cannot be implemented in a soccer-specific way.

The tactical periodization model specifically takes into account this problem and, to date, is the only model that fully reproduces the complexity of soccer and presents a holistic approach, which we will now explain on the following pages.

The following quote from Mourinho provides a small preview of the tactical periodization concept :

“Who is the fastest man in the world? Let’s assume it is Francis Obikwelu, who can run 100 meters in less than 10 seconds. He is very fast, and I don’t know any footballer that could keep up with him in a 100-meter race. However, in a football match, 11 against 11, I think Obikwelu would be the slowest!”

Furthermore, Mourinho says:

“Here’s another example: textbook case of a slow player is Deco. If we were to put him in a 100-meter race with other athletes he would make a fool of himself…he’s probably loaded with slow-twitch muscle fiber instead of fast-twitch muscle fiber. However, on the pitch, he is one of the fastest players I know because pure speed has nothing to do with football speed. Speed in football is about analysis of the situation, reaction to stimulus, and the ability to identify it.”

“Therefore, to me, working on individualized qualities or out of context from the complexity of the game is a serious mistake.”

Summarized: Mourinho is absolutely convinced that the fastest sprinter in the world, Usain Bolt, would be the slowest player on the soccer field.
