Chapter Seven

It had been another busy week for Chelsea. She’d bought herself a car, a midsize Ford that was bright red and had low mileage. She’d spent a day driving around on country roads, making turns left and right to familiarize herself after five years of not driving any kind of a vehicle.

It was Friday, and tonight she was going to the Red Barn with Melinda and Roger, although she’d insisted that she would meet the couple at the local bar. She knew they’d want to stay much later than she did so it was important she have her own set of wheels to come home in when she’d had enough of the loud music and socializing.

However, that was later tonight. Before the night’s activity, her mother was coming over for lunch. It would be the first time her mother would be visiting her here, and Chelsea wanted everything to be perfect.

She checked the table, pleased with the fresh flower arrangement she’d bought earlier in the day. The water glasses were spotless, and her yellow dishes with the yellow-and-white-checkered cloth napkins looked cheerful and bright.

The chicken salad was in the refrigerator, ready to be placed on the croissant rolls, and a large green salad awaited drizzling with homemade green goddess dressing. There was also cherry cheesecake from her mother’s favorite bakery in town for dessert.

Jeb had continued to work on the house. He’d finished up the painting in her bedroom, and she had set him to work on the porch steps and railing before painting more inside. He’d finished the work on them late last night. He had three more rooms to paint upstairs, and then the entire outside of the house.

Charlie Harrison had sent several men to her place to install a security system, so she now felt safe in her own home. It had been a good week except for one thing...the absence of Johnny.

Even though she knew she needed to get over him, that there was no path forward for her with him, it was difficult to do. While her head had gotten his message loud and clear, her heart still refused to let go.

However, she couldn’t think about him now, not with her mother arriving within minutes. She did one last run-through to make sure everything was dusted and clean, and by that time her mother was knocking on her door.

“Hi, come in,” Chelsea greeted her mother with a smile.

“The place is a bit of an eyesore,” Stella said with a frown.

“Jeb will be painting it all in the next couple of days,” Chelsea replied. “Why don’t you have a seat on the sofa so we can visit for a while. It seems like it has been forever since I’ve seen or talked to you.” Chelsea gestured toward the sofa.

“Can’t we just get right to lunch? I have a lot of things to do today, and I shouldn’t be taking this time off as it is,” Stella asked.

“Of course. Then come on into the kitchen. It will just take me a matter of minutes to get the meal on the table.
