Nikki Roach:

A Day in the Life of

a Conservation Biologist

As a teen growing up in Oakland, California, the idea of leaving her house sometimes made Nikki Roach sick to her stomach. Whether it was a short walk to the grocery store or a slumber party with her friends, Nikki’s heart pounded, and her insides cramped up. Her thoughts spiraled as she imagined leaving the confines of her safety net.

What if she panicked? And then what? Who would help her?

“My fear is anxiety itself,”1 Nikki says, explaining that one of her biggest fears is being all alone during a panic attack and having no one to help her.

“I can’t pinpoint any one incident triggering my anxiety. It’s been this way my entire life.” Nikki says that she used to walk around looking for the first place to exit. She remembers being hypervigilant of her surroundings, always looking for a way out if she got too anxious.

Even so, Nikki says that by the time she was in high school, “I had vivid dreams of traveling and living abroad for long periods of time. But there was always that nagging thought in my head. Could I do it?”
