What makes experiment #2 a Gedanken experiment? The car and gun can easily be traveling along a perfectly flat road. The gun can easily be aimed vertically since we again imagine we have a laser targeting system and a protractor. So far, this experiment is reasonably cheap, and very ‘do-able.’ The reason this experiment is a ‘thought experiment’ is because again, we perform the experiment in a room with no air! There’s the Gedanken!

3. GEDANKEN EXPERIMENT #3: Before LeBron James, there were the Cleveland Cavaliers of the 1980s. This group of guys was my favorite basketball team. They were a scrappy bunch of players with a blue-collar attitude that executed a great game of team-basketball: crisp passing, tenacious defense, patient offense, and the ability to make their foul shots. My favorite player was a guy named Craig Ehlo. What a scrapper! He was always diving for a loose ball, hustling back on defense, taking the charge. Once after a game, Ehlo stopped by and chatted with my sister, some fans, and me. He posed for pictures and made sure everyone left with an autograph—great player and a nice guy.

For our last Gedanken experiment, imagine Craig Ehlo dribbling across the key. Once again, all the air has been pumped out of the arena. We have an overhead view of his upcoming shot because we are in the rafters looking down at the play. As he moves horizontally across the key, he shots the ball.
