”Heidi’s lessons started to go better, but that was the only good change in the young girl. Ever since Ms. Rottenmeier had told Heidi that she was being nasty for wanting to leave, Heidi had lost her spirit. She finally understood that she wouldn’t be going home anytime soon. In fact, maybe she would never get to go home. But to share her sadness with Clara or Grandmamma would seem ungrateful. And so the feeling of heaviness on her little heart grew until she could no longer eat. She lay awake at night for hours. As soon as she was alone, the picture of the mountain with its sunshine and flowers would rise before her eyes. When she woke in the morning, she would think she was back at Grandfather’s ready to greet the goats in the morning sun. Her looks of sadness worried Grandmamma.

“Tell me, Heidi,” the old woman said, “what is the matter? Are you in trouble?”

Heidi was afraid that Grandmamma would think poorly of her if she told the truth. She didn’t want the woman to dislike her, so she simply said, “I can’t tell you.”

“Then you must speak to God about it. If you can’t tell a person, then tell your problems to God. Pray to him to help you.”

“I never say prayers anymore,” answered Heidi.

“Do not tell me that, Heidi! Why have you stopped?”

“It’s no use! God doesn’t listen. I have prayed for the same thing every day for weeks and God has not done what I asked.” The young girl put her head down.

“You are wrong, Heidi. You must not think of him like that. God is good to all of us. He knows what we need better than we do. And just because he thinks it is better not to give you what you want right now doesn’t mean he isn’t answering you. You shall have what you ask for, but not until the right time comes.”

“I will go right now and ask God to forgive me,” Heidi said.

“Go, child. He will help you and give you everything that will make you happy again.”

Heidi ran out of Grandmamma’s room and into her own. She sat herself on a stool, folded her hands together, and told God about everything that was making her so sad. She begged him to help her and let her go home to Grandfather. She didn’t think she could take much more. She just missed home too much.
