This verse is said to have been sent to Ransetsu, Bashâs favourite pupil. Tradition says that the bagworm chirps in a feeble, sad voice, longing for its parents, and has been a favourite insect with poets from of old. I cannot but feel that this verse symbolizes Bashâs life of quietude. is pronounced either âioriâ or simply âio.â
Come to listen
To the basket-worms,
To my lowly hut.

A cuckoo has cried; lo ! the moon
Gleams through a great grove of bamboos.
