Chapter 7

Carla

I stand outside his penthouse, waiting to be let in. I’m nervous.

In the 5 years I’ve known him, this is the first time he’s cooked for me. In fact, I haven’t been to his apartment much, not unless it’s for work.

What’s changed now? Why did he get so angry before, and why does he want to cook me dinner as an apology when he’s never done that before? What does he want to talk to me about?

The anticipation is getting to me, and the fact that I’m dressed to impress doesn’t help either. I feel self-conscious.

This is not a date, you idiot. My mind knows that. But my heart, my heart yearns for more.

My heart wants to believe that David was jealous earlier and that’s why he acted the way he did. But I know that’s crazy. He doesn’t like me like that; if he did, he would have told me sooner. He wouldn’t have waited 5 years.

My nervous, jittery thoughts were interrupted when David opens the door, and I almost gasp at what I see.

He’s a sight to behold, and I can’t take my eyes off him.

He’s wearing dress pants and shirt with an informal designer coat that fits him like a glove.

Looks like I’m not the only one who’s dressed to impress.

“Come in”, he says, with a smile.

I follow him into the kitchen and let out a low whistle at the ingredients laid out on the dining table.

A full chicken, salmon, vegetables, rice and a bottle of wine that’s so out of place in a friendly dinner.

“You’ve gone all out, haven’t you?”, I ask with a soft laugh.

He looks back at me and smiles, his eyes crinkling at the corners.

“Well, you wanted a feast, so hear it is. Sit down, I’ll be done soon”.

“I want to help”.

He smiles at me again and I feel a pleasant shiver go down my spine. Something feels different about this dinner, but I like it.

We work in comfortable silence and soon, we lay out a perfectly done roasted chicken with vegetables, salmon and potatoes and rice on the table.

I look at the wine bottle on the table. I’m curious about it. It looks too expensive to be out of a five-star restaurant.

Curious, I lift it up and look at the date. My eyes widen. A 30-year old wine? Is he crazy?

“I was kidding when I said I wanted your best wine, you know? Come on, this is too much”. I didn’t want to waste a good bottle of wine over a small fight. I felt too guilty.

“Trust me. Today warrants it”, he says with a mysterious smile sent my way.

I’m getting confused by the minute.

He’s decked from top to bottom. I’ve never seen him dress up with such care before. He’s laid out a feast before my eyes and he’s ready to open a bottle of crazy expensive wine.

All for an apology dinner.

It doesn’t add up.

But I don’t want to ruin our dinner. Yesterday’s dinner was ruined already, and I don’t want a repeat, so I keep my thoughts to myself.
