Chapter 9 - Elijah
His heart rate had become frantic after consuming the amarok's poison. It had tasted divine on Esmeralda's lips, bleeding into his nervous system under his willful desire to kiss her rather than preserve himself.
He had tasted the poison before out of scholarly curiosity. The numbness on his lips had amused him, but it must have been the difference in quantity that had the substance injecting life into a heart that otherwise barely moved to keep him functioning.
"I ... I'm ... are we dying?" Esmeralda moaned from somewhere nearby.
The room was spinning, colors and textures blending together in an unwieldy, overwhelming canvas.
He laughed. "No, we're quite all right. I neglected to tell you, my dear, of the curious side effects of consuming the amarok's poison in non-lethal dosages."
Elijah stretched out on the couch, his pulse raging. He tilted his head downward, looking down at Esmeralda, who had sat on the floor near him. She was close enough that he could smell the sweet aroma of her hair and skin. And now that her pulse was racing, too, the thrum of her blood was loud in his ears.
He wanted to taste her ... to consume her ... to devour every part of her.
With a satisfied sigh, he sank into the couch farther.
"You're oddly relaxed," Esmeralda slurred slightly, "considering we just found out who's been plotting the deaths of your family, and we accidentally ingested a poison."
"Oh it was no accident, was it?" He chuckled. "It was smart, what you did. Using the poisonous nectar, which is the part of the amarok flower with the most potent magic, to enhance and anchor the magic between the two of us until it allowed your vision to blossom."
Esmeralda blushed; he found himself noting how cute the slight pink hue of her cheeks was.
"How do you know that's what I did?"
"Even if I'm not an accomplished magic user like yourself, I've been studying the craft for a long time." He smirked. "And I felt it, when you kissed me. The anchor ..."
Their kiss had been a shock to him, and yet exquisite all the same. He'd embraced it in the moment, letting Esmeralda's magic take hold of him. And now he wanted more. To feel her gentle lips on his, to feel her body pressed against his own, to touch and taste every inch of her.
He could feel the poison working its way through his system, igniting his desire, making his veins feel red-hot with need. It wouldn't be long before the flower took full effect.
"Elijah," Esmeralda said, her voice laced with want and need as she tilted her head to meet his eyes. Hers were deep pools of liquid chocolate, as luscious as the rest of her. "What's happening to us?"
"The amarok's poison ... it has several known side effects if you get the dosage right ... or wrong, I suppose. One potential effect is that it leaves you feeling drunk. Alternatively, it makes people very ... passionate." He paused, licking his lips as he fought the urge to pounce on her.
