Chapter 9

RAVEN

The ground gave way as I followed the river downstream, hoping to find the cave and Orxlon again. My body fell with a splash into the river, the icy water swirling around me. I screeched, but the tumbling water hid my voice. No one heard, and I didn’t want those dreaded aliens to know where I was. I’m an excellent swimmer, when on Earth, when in the right gear. My pants and top were saturated with water, but being lightweight helped. The shoes had traction and some heavy bits on the bottom that did not allow my legs to float. Do I pull them off and swim to shore only to be barefoot in the horrid jungle? Lost and barefoot was not exactly what I wanted. Wet, dingy shoes were better than bare feet. Being hungry for days, my weak body couldn’t swim as fast as I needed to reach the shore. I kept my feet kicking, spending what little energy I had until I finally reached shallow water. The struggle to stand was better than the struggle to swim in full clothing. My teeth chattered as I waded to the shore and pulled my body out of the water. The storms had caused the river to race as its level increased.

I collapsed onto the ground, the rocks and grass not providing a very comfortable spot, but at least it was a little warmer in the sun as it peeked around the clouds. My shoes, which could have drowned me from their weight as I came across, came off easily as I laid back, allowing the rays of the strange yellow green light to bathe me, warm me, and dry me. I didn’t care if anyone found me. I was too tired and hungry and cold. I needed warmth. I took in deep breaths as I peered up at the sky. At least I was out in the open, where I wouldn’t go into a full-blown panic attack.

“Oh, Orxlon, where are you?” I cried quietly.

My stomach rolled with an angry growl. I hadn’t had actual food in days, not since we crashed on this God-forsaken planet. Paradise, my ass. My eyes closed for what I thought would be just for a moment. I awoke some time later when I heard the jungle floor snapping behind me. Bolting upright, I shoved my feet into my now-dry shoes. I’d slept for a while. Another snap behind me and I jumped up and dove to the side, behind an outcropping of rocks at the river’s edge where it hid me well. My parched mouth smacked, so I reached and scooped a handful of water. I spat, spewing the rancid water from my lips. It swirled with green and brown, like the algae ponds had uprooted and flowed by right at that moment.

Sickening gurgles resounded from the depths of my belly. I was hungry and thirsty and nothing around could stop the intensity of it. Swallowing with a dry mouth proved fruitless as I swayed with dizziness.
