Complete silence followed Chloe’s unexpected announcement. Varn was very surprised to be the first one to recover.

“No problem,” Kyle said with a wide grin. “I’m sure one of our podmates will volunteer to play the part of besotted lover as you explain to your boss that you need to resign urgently for family reasons.”

“I will,” Varn said quickly. He’d found the idea of learning more about Chloe—even if it was only a brief visit to her workplace to resign—very appealing. “In that case, maybe we should all come with you to resign,” Noco said with a human-style wink.

Chloe laughed but shook her head. “That would turn the whole building green, but it might lend credence to an abducted by aliens theory. I’m already acting out of character as it is.”

Varn watched her closely, concerned that she really was acting out of character. What if they got her home and she realized she’d made a mistake? He felt Noco place a warm hand on his thigh in comfort, but it was Chloe’s reassurance that soothed his mind.

“My work friends don’t really know me. They see a hard-working, dedicated professional. I doubt any of them even realize I leave the office.” She nodded, perhaps prompted by Rick as she carefully moved off the table and climbed onto Varn’s lap.
